in the kitchen Cal urged on the water heating in the coffeepot, and yet he was pleased to be waiting.

I Hadn't Noticed

light when he wakes makes him want to be good
light when he wakes makes him see things he shouldn't lose sight of
i hadn't noticed
leaves on the trees show him lessons are learned
leaves on the trees show a new leaf's been turned and he's born again
i hadn't noticed
he feels he's changing because of the spring
he feels he's changing 'cause round him the birds start to sing again
i hadn't noticed
nobody takes him that seriously
'cause he keeps having the same 'ckin ephiphany
i hadn't noticed

once more into the woods, my friends
you, my former selves, on either flank
re-tracing and re-making
paths along the river bank.
some of us were here last week
and some of us are in our teens
running single file
counting down the steps to Giant's Castle Bridge.
once more into the woods, my friends
you, my former selves, for company
not faltering where the path splits
because we know where both ways lead.
some of us go left and up
and some of us go right to find
the Bollin by our side
and eddies binding time beneath Kingfisher Bridge.
climb the hill and through the field
past the old Apprentice House
the scarecrow needs a change of shirt
'cause the birds now have their doubts
and look here come the others
from a different mile
their feet have buffed the lonely stones of Chapel Bridge.
once more into the woods my friends
you, my former selves, on either side
running with the same feet
we're all still alive.
some of us are slowing down and
some of us are striding out
heading for the mill
only one more bridge to cross at Heron's Pool.
following paths we've made.

last in the room again
put down your fountain pen
why not pretend you're through?
last in the room again
Halogen lights won't dim
why not pretend they do?
lost in my mind again
and we meet, babe
and i keep standing on your feet, babe
i keep standing on your feet
last in the room again
outside the night breathes in
oh, won't you send a glance.
last in the room again,
sigh every now and then,
oh, don't offend Romance.
lost in my mind again
and we meet, babe
and i keep standing on your feet, babe
i keep standing on your feet
there are a thousands things to read
but lend me your book
(i want to sit next to you)
there are a hundred shelves of things to read
but lend me your book
(we'll share)
i keep standing on your feet
(round and round we go)

Free to Choose
00:52
|
|
||
when i say I love you
let it be
softly in the middle of the night
when the universe is too dazzled by itself to notice
a small new light. or better still,
let me speak
into some empty moment of your sleep
between two dreams perhaps
so waking you'll be free
to choose what will be dream
and what reality
[words by Barbara Cormack]

D-Bird

skylight yawn
sleepy bright
morning train
shakes off the night
Kicia waits
by your head
"time to go outside"
she said.
keep flying, D-bird
you look so good in the air
keep flying, D-bird
i'll come and join you there.
leave your tea
by the bed
futures float
in leaves unread.
time to go.

So In Love
03:49
|
|

walked for an hour
her hand in mind
i counted cars
to pass the time
eight, nine, ten, a queue was forming
got to the bar
to meet them all
couple of beers
feel comfortable
want to hold you until morning
so...
steady she breathes
like a song
leave her the keys
and the radio on
freedom's walking to the office
hope that some day
i'll need her voice
but all i can say is
"you make the choice:
take-out or table service".
so...
so in love
they think we're so in love

Trust The Water
04:01
|
|
||
pebbles smooth and cold beneath our February feet
chips wrapped up in paper shiver as they lose their heat
sad to see the sea where once we swam in winter's sun
time to trust the water which knows when the river's run
i know my girl loves me but i'm not her guy anymore
i gave her away
metal on a flagpole jangles rhythms on the breeze
photos misremember adding warmth to what they freeze
you and i stand smiling, drying, in the winter sun
time to trust the water which knows when the river's run
